Paleo Protein Powder | The Problem with Protein Shakes and Why You Should Drink Them

Paleo Protein Shake | Alkalizing Your Protein Shake

Alkalizing Your Protein Shake
So many paleo enthusiasts are skipping the protein shakes in an effort to live a healthier life. The idea is that whey protein is not “paleo” and thus shouldn't be consumed.

While this is a good start, if you are avoiding whey protein you are missing a huge opportunity to not only build lean muscle, but also burn unwanted body fat.

The Real Problem with Whey Protein Shakes

The paleo diet avoids processed foods for good reason; they are a cheap source of food. Paleo enthusiasts avoid whey protein shakes for good reason as well:

-The milk often comes from cows treated with hormones
-Artificial sweeteners
-Cheap, heat treated protein
-Contain soy products

While these are reason enough not to drink protein shakes, the truth is that these problems are avoidable.
Companies like TrueProtein sell grass-fed whey protein and you can even choose your sweetener. Biotrust recently created a healthy protein powder that addresses every single one of the issues listed above!

The real problem with whey protein shakes is that they create an acidic environment within your body. In an effort to neutralize the acid, your body pulls from its alkali stores which happen to be calcium in your bones! Over time this can lead to calcium deficiencies and eventually osteoporosis.

Truth about Whey

Mimic Nature

While whey protein is acidic, many other healthy foods are too! The difference is that in nature these acidic foods are often paired with alkalizing foods to neutralize the meal. Think about a steak (acidic) matched with veggies (alkalizing).

You can do this too! By simply including alkalizing foods to your protein shake you will be able to take advantage of the protein while reducing the acidic effects!

Alkalizing Your Protein Shake

Here are a few great additives that will both alkalize and increase the flavor of your Paleo Protein Shake!

Almond Butter – Almonds are alkalizing and a great source of healthy fat! Almond butter goes great with chocolate and peanut flavored protein.

Banana – Bananas are a great way to alkalize your shake and also adds great flavor! Be careful of the fructose!

Cinnamon – Cinnamon will not only help alkalize your shake, it will also help you digest the protein!

Broccoli - Before you say anything let me just say – you won’t be able to taste the broccoli. This is a great way to hide your veggies without realizing it and also helps alkalize your shake!

Drink Your Protein

The fact is that the benefits of an alkalized protein shake outweigh the costs. Half of the foods you already eat are acidic, the key is to match those acidic foods with alkalizing foods. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

Start with a healthy protein powder and see what combinations you can come up with. What do you think?

I like this idea! Protein shakes are an easy way to add a little extra protein. Especially for people like me who work out and try and follow a paleo style diet.

Ya Doug, I go through cinnamon like there is no tomorrow! It tastes so good in a chocolate shake and the benefits are cool too!

Do you add all those ingredients to one shake? And what quantities should we use?

You definitely can, Dakim. Quantities would of course depend on your goals. If you are trying to gain muscle I would consider throwing in the entire banana and 1-2 scoops of almond butter. If I was trying to lean out, half a banana and 1 scoop of butter would be more ideal. I'd be careful with adding to much broccoli though, too much can ruin your shake! Start with a couple pieces and work up from there. Obv you want as much broc as you can handle because none of us eat enough greens! Another good option is coconut oil (melted first) added to the shake! Hope this helps...

Um, the BioTrust protein you link to here contains Swerve and Stevia, both of which are artificial sweeteners are they not?

I like where your head's at, Jason. In a perfect world where ego didn't exist and you only cared about your health, I wouldn't even suggest drinking protein shakes at all. Obviously, animal protein is best. But that's not what this article is about - hell, it's not even what this entire website is about! I provide information on building a muscular physique the healthiest way possible. A strict paleo diet simply is not appropriate for somebody lifting heavy weights, as suggested here. I also suggest eating rice, potatoes, and oatmeal which you won't find on most paleo websites. I don't prescribe to dogma...I do what works and makes sense. What I am suggesting is a way to make your shakes as healthy as possible in an effort to build the physique you want. You have to think about opportunity cost. Sure, you're eating artificial sweetener (Stevia is the safest, btw), but that added protein is going to lead to a leaner (and more muscular) physique than if it was avoided. Study after study shows correlations between a lean physique and good health. The more muscle you have, the more nutrients are shuttled to muscle cells vs fat cells. You do what best fits you though! If you're goal is to be healthy and you're not concerned about muscle, why are you even reading about protein shakes? Do you have a better alternative? Thanks for stopping by!

Ryan - i like your philosophy - and this is a great article - pragmatism over dogmatism is always best !

one correction: Stevia is NOT artificial - it comes from the leaf of a plant - it just happens to be less caloric than sugars.

aspartame is considered artificial - it is "created" in a lab.

Another benefit of cinnamon is that it has anti-inflammatory properties much like aspirin or ibuprofen without the internal bleeding risks associated with NSAIDs. Good for sore muscles- some studies have shown significant muscle gain in folks who take NSAIDs because even without realizing it, they tend to work harder if it hurts less. So cinnamon may actually boost your athleticism due to its anti-inflammatory properties

Hi Michelle; there's definitely some options for you. Are you trying to gain muscle? If you're not getting enough protein through your food (1g protein/body weight lbs), check out true nutrition's paleo options. They offer a beef and egg protein that might be alright. I've never tried it, though. Let me know if you try it!

Ryan, yes, I am trying to increase muscle mass and get into a state of ketosis. I don't like to eat meat on a daily basis, even though I have had a paleolithic lifestyle for over 2-years. I eat a lot of eggs, but I love my smoothies. I used to buy egg white powder, but I read that it wasn't the best protein source. I may even try Great Lakes Gelatin. I have a lot of research to do before I decide on anything. I will let you know. Thanks!
